Is it ok to run a lower wattage speaker with a higher wattage receiver if you are careful?
I have a Denon AVR-4806 putting out 140w x7 and I wanted to get some outdoor speakers for a 2nd zone. I was thinking about the Polk Atrium 45 but it lists the recommended wattage as 10-80 watts. Would it be ok if I kept the volume below half or something? I'm having some trouble finding outdoor speakers rated at 140 watts.
More speakers are blown by trying to play them too loud on an amplifier that is too small rather than one that is too big. Distortion kills speakers faster than anything. You should be fine but yes, be careful, don't crank it! An amplifier that is too small and driven to clipping will blow them but an amplifier that is too big and driven to clipping will blow them even faster! Just don't try to play them louder than they are designed to play. It's actually better to have reserve power beyond the speakers rating assuming you don't abuse it.
