Will these speakers work with my reciever?
I have now discontinued Sony HT-7000DH. The system is fine for my needs, but I want in wall speakers. I know the difference between RMS and max output, but I still a little confused. The reciever manual state that it outputs 90w +90w in stereo mode.
Sorround mode says RMS 140w/ch. What would the max w on these be?
the in-wall speakers I found at Best Buy state 140w max input but no RMS.

The BB rep said that if I over power them, will blow them and if I under ower them, they will sound bad.
I know it's a long question but I want to explain it well.
Clearly the BB rep works at Best Buy instead of an independent high-end audio/video store for a reason.
Watts in speakers and amplifiers is not like fuses or light bulbs. If you put over 1 amp in a 1 amp fuse it blows, if you stay less than 1 amp it doesn't blow. Screw in a 60 watt light bulb in your lamp and it draws 60 watts off the line. Speakers don't work that way.
You can use a 5 watt speaker on a 1000 watt amplifier if you want to and not have any problems as long as you don't turn it up excessively. A typical set of speakers having about 87 dB sensitivity (which is typical) will be seeing about 1 ~ 3 watts from the amplifier most of the time. Then when there is a really loud sound effect in a movie or in music this may briefly increase by 100 times or more. Speaker power ratings are gross approximations at best. Frequency, harmonic distortion content etc all play a part in the power handling and it can get very complex so there is no simple number that can accurately express it. Because of this it is possible to damage speakers with far less than their rated power and it is possible to briefly expose them to far greater than the rated power without damage. The most common cause of speaker failure is too much exposure to high levels of distortion, not simply too much power. Ideally the amplifier would have unlimited power so that distortion caused by amplifier clipping is never a problem. This would be the safest condition for any speaker.
So, there are far more important considerations when it comes to speakers... like how they sound. As for determining amplifier compatibility a more important specification to look at is sensitivity which will be expressed in dB @ 1 watt/1 meter. This is the spec that tells you if a particular power amplifier is right for the speaker. The max power handling of the speaker doesn't really have anything to do with it. The more sensitive a speaker, the less amplifier it needs. Just a 3 dB increase in sensitivity requires 50% less amplifier power.
